The Brother MFC-L8930CDW is a colour laser multifunction copier for offices that print steadily all day. It runs at 33 pages a minute in colour and the same in black, with automatic two-sided printing, and the adjustable tray takes Letter, Legal, Executive, Folio, A4, A5 and A6.

Scanning is a strength of this machine

The document feeder scans both sides in a single pass at 600 dpi optical, and pages go straight to email, a network folder, SharePoint, FTP or SFTP, a USB stick or the cloud, without stopping at a PC first. Copies run to 1200 x 600 dpi and printing to 2400 x 600.

Cost per page is where this machine earns its keep

The MFC-L8930CDW ships with Brother Genuine toner in the box — 3,000 pages of black and 1,800 of colour — and takes the TN-635 family from there. For a machine printing at volume, the super high yield TN-635XXL cartridges are the right choice and bring the cost per page down substantially. Setting two-sided printing as the default cuts paper spend roughly in half on documents that run to more than one page.

On the network

Gigabit Ethernet and USB, with dual-band Wi-Fi on 2.4 and 5 GHz where running a cable is not practical. Brother's Triple Layer Security covers three things: locking down the device settings, encrypting documents on their way to and from the machine, and restricting which users and networks can reach it. One-year limited warranty.
